When former clients decided to downsize to a smaller version of their previous home in East Hampton village, they called Linda Burkhardt to facilitate all the details. A newer, fresher version of the kitchen she had in her other home, with an open floor plan, lots of built-ins, a palette of creamy neutrals, and a contemporary vibe with some traditional touches was the new vision.
A big picture window over the cooktop, backsplash windows, provide the light, airy feeling. All cabinetry is custom with natural reflective quartzite for the countertops and backsplash.
The kitchen island seats four, but is also open on all sides so it can accommodate six to eight for casual dinners or big family breakfasts.
Cabinet handles and drawer pulls are stainless steel and made in Germany. The look is clean, classic, durable, and timeless.
The client loves to cook but didn’t want her counters cluttered with appliances. We created this nook with an electrical outlet to hide a KitchenAid mixer and other small appliances.
We bumped out the window around the sink to open the kitchen up to the outside and provide additional counter space.
A brushed stainless faucet and under mount sink continue the clean, neat lines. An air switch for the garbage disposal (the button to the left of the faucet) ensures the disposal doesn't accidentally turn on.
A Thermador cooktop includes a pop-up downdraft ventilation system that only appears when needed. Backsplash windows flood the countertops with natural light.
In the family room custom built-ins for the clients electronics include black interiors to camouflage them and wire mesh panels of stainless steel for ventilation
The built-in shelving echoes the grid of the glass-paned doors leading to the outside dining area and pool.
A cozy room off the side entrance to the house serves as a compact home office, with built-in cabinets and Corian surfaces. The space lets the client keep all her projects and paperwork behind closed doors, in the same fresh, streamlined style as the rest of the house.
The palette of creamy neutrals carries over into the master bath, where our team installed Crema Marfil marble tile in a herringbone patter on the floor. The same marble covers the vanities and the walk-in shower.
Custom-made recessed medicine cabinets above each sink offer room for storage. Linen white walls with white trim reflect the soft glow of the hand-blown glass pendant light
Glass knobs on the vanities add a clean, classic traditional touch.
The client’s desire for a clean, streamlined look throughout the house led to the creation of this wall of cabinetry in the finished basement, where everything from holiday decorations to extra serve-ware and dishes are stored for easy access.
The difference is in the details in this modern Montauk home, and Linda Burkhardt paid exquisite attention to every one to bring the client’s vision to life. The look is clean and modern, with the same materials used throughout to provide a cohesive feel. The easy flow from one room to the next echoes the rhythmic flow of the ocean visible just beyond the house.
An office off the master suite includes his and her desks, with a thick floating shelf above for display and storage.
The desk is rift-sawn white oak, whitewashed to a blond finish. Oak flooring contributes to the seamless look and feel of the room.
A single piece of glass protects the desktop and makes for easy cleaning. Channel finger pulls in drawers eliminate the need for hardware
Simple shelving made of the same rift-sawn white oak graces the kitchen.
A fireplace next to the glass-topped table backs up to the kitchen range.
A tall custom made glass-fronted cabinet holds all the everyday dishes.
The limestone flooring continues from the dining area into the kitchen
A range, oven, and hood fill the freestanding column on the other side of the dining room fireplace.
White cabinetry with edge pull hardware provides a minimum of fuss
A custom wood-block insert holds knives, to there’s no need for a knife block to clutter up counter space
The same clean-lined, simple white cabinetry as in the kitchen carries over into the family room. The flooring is whitewashed oak, just like the office.
A series of built-ins in the guest room offer shelf space and room to store things in the cupboards below.
Countertops of honed, white, engineered quartz top a vanity of rift-sawn white oak in the guest bath. A gliding frameless shower door maximizes space. A floating shelf beneath the vanity provides additional storage space.
In the kids bath gray limestone flooring is the same material used throughout the other rooms of the house, including the kitchen and dining area. A wall-to-wall surface mounted medicine cabinet provides plenty of storage.
In the master bath LED lighting from both above and below the medicine cabinet offers bright, flattering light. All the bathrooms utilize the same large format white matte ceramic tile.
Linda Burkhardt executed the architect’s details and the client’s vision to open up a modern home to the outdoors, provide a backdrop for the family’s much-loved art collection, and create space for seamless transitions between home, pool, and gardens. The work involved remodeling the kitchen, adding a new stairway between the kitchen and lower level, and converting the laundry room into a combination butler’s pantry and laundry space. The goal: Keeping the design cohesive with details that thread throughout the house.
The owner loves to entertain and has a family member who’s a professional chef. The kitchen needed to provide space for multiple people to work together and the main sink offers plenty of counter space on each side for those work areas.
Custom walnut cabinetry serves as a rich, warm setting for gleaming stainless appliances.
The addition of a large picture window and a staircase with glass panels bring the outside in year-round. The staircase provides easy access to and from the kitchen from the pool.
The kitchen is open to the breakfast room, so everyone can join in. The client had already purchased the marble table and chairs, so incorporating them into the space was an important part of the design,
A zebra wood top for the island carries over the warm tones of the cabinetry.
Flat doors on the cabinets and flush edge pulls minimize fussiness. Everything is simple and clean. Built-in niches in the backsplash house beans, nuts, and grains in glass jars.
Countertops and the backsplash are honed black granite. The multi-functional Kohler under mount sink accommodates a cutting board, colander, and other accessories.
An Italian staircase opens up the space. A wood handrail with glass and steel panels draws the eye toward the views beyond the window.
Walls and shelves inside the cabinets are a bright crimson red; frosted glass diffuses the color only slightly. A prep sink offers more options for multiple cooks.
The client already owned the Viking range and hood.
A niche for small appliances above also helps keep everything off the counters, so there’s more space for meal prep and clean up.
We reconfigured a large, existing laundry room to provide space for a pantry as well as laundry facilities. Honed black countertops with matching backsplashes carry over from the kitchen design. A cleanup sink, icemaker, and extra dishwasher make entertaining easier.
Citron yellow cabinet interiors provide a bold backdrop for dishes and glassware and add a splash of color, echoing the bold colors of the paintings in the laundry room beyond.
Oak flooring with a dark stain is the same as the flooring in the kitchen, so the spaces flow together.
Montauk Contemporary Pantry/Laundry
Neutral walls and dark trim echo the modern contemporary feel of the rest of the house and provide the perfect backdrop for colorful art.
A new Italian floating staircase leads down to a rec room and full bath for the pool area. The wood risers are stained to match the oak flooring in the kitchen.
Freestanding shelves hold the owner’s extensive cookbook collection, just steps away from the kitchen above.
A piece from the art collection anticipates the blues and greens of the outdoors and pool area that lie just beyond the stairs to the lower level.
Honed black granite surfaces echo the countertops in the kitchen and butler’s pantry. Glass tile brightens the shower area, and practical gray ceramic flooring tile continues the neutral color scheme of the rest of the house.

Clients who love to cook and entertain were looking to maximize every bit of space in their small, outdated kitchen without moving walls or windows or sacrificing their traditional farmhouse style. Linda Burkhardt’s thoughtful design created exactly the kind of cozy, lived-in feeling they wanted—plus professional-style appliances, a multi-use kitchen island, and other details make for a real cook’s kitchen.
A multi-use farm table keeps the kitchen light and airy, with a walnut surface, space to accommodate stools for casual dining, and plenty of room underneath to store vegetables from the family’s garden
The base of the island is painted a rich navy blue, a beautiful complement to the warm walnut tones of the island countertop and the walnut-stained pine flooring.
Hooks for dishtowels on one end of the island are one of many small details that make the space eminently livable.
A custom made chalkboard is the perfect spot for grocery lists or Happy Birthday messages.
Hooks for dishtowels on one end of the island are one of many small details that make the space eminently livable.
A magnetic backsplash under the cookbook shelf does double duty as a spot to pin calendars and notes and a place to store spices for easy access.
We painted existing brick walls a farmhouse white.
A Kohler farm sink is key to the home’s country farmhouse aesthetic. Countertops look like Carrera marble but are actually quartz, selected for its durability.
A Wolf range and hood offer professional-level cooking options.
A wall of shallow storage near the back door offers easy access to the outdoor dining area. Cabinets hide liquor, glassware, and stemware. Mini brick tile of handmade glass in blues and grays carries over color from the island.
A narrow space between the refrigerator and back wall was big enough to house a pullout pantry.
We also remodeled the family’s master bathroom, another compact space. A frameless, gliding shower door allows for easy access.
Blue glass tile provides a splash of color in shower niches; the flooring is white marble with blue azul accents. A small niche below the faucets provide a footrest for shaving legs.
A recessed medicine cabinet allows for more storage, and cylindrical wall scones provide proper lighting without taking up took much space.
Pale blue walls add to the feeling of airiness and open sky.

Linda transformed this bachelor's breath taking Montauk home. She did several key things to showcase the ocean view. She added windows behind the sink, replaced smaller windows with larger ones and added a bay window in the living room. She designed white custom cabinetry with black granite countertops and a built in bar for entertaining. A mahogany island is the centerpiece of the kitchen.
Linda enlarged this master bathroom by removing a small closet in the master bedroom. A combination of textures and styles makes this master bath feel warm and inviting. A shelf behind the sink showcases found objects from the beach. You are never more than an arms length away from grabbing a towel from the smartly design alcove—surfs up!
